What to Look For in a Baker
Reliability
Low missed blocks and attestations. Bakers below 67% attestation rate get deactivated.
Capacity
Bakers accept delegations up to 9x their own stake. Overdelegated bakers = lower rewards.
Fees
Baker fee (edge) typically 5-10%. Lower fee = more rewards for you.
tz4/BLS
tz4 bakers use BLS signatures enabling 63x bandwidth reduction. Supports network evolution.
How Baking Works
Bakers are the validators that secure the Tezos network. They:
- Create blocks — Bakers are assigned block creation rights based on their staking power
- Attest blocks — Validate blocks created by other bakers (67% threshold for rewards)
- Vote on upgrades — Participate in on-chain governance
- Earn rewards — Block rewards + attestation rewards, shared with delegators/stakers
Minimum staking power: 6,000 XTZ. Cycles are ~1 day (14,400 blocks at 6-second block time).
